Entry to the castle grounds is free for this event.
However, to enjoy the high quality wines from the Weinland Breisgau region and from excellent English producers as well as the magnificent LocAle brews you will need to purchase a souvenir glass. Retain your glass for the whole weekend - you don’t need to buy a new one each time you attend!

2008/9 saw the 25th anniversary of the very successful twinning link between Newark and the German town of Emmendingen in the Black Forest. Over the years many people and groups from both towns have benefited from the partnership and lifelong friendships (and a few marriages!) have been made. Emmendingen is the largest town within the Breisgau wine producing area which contains approximately 30 different wine producers.
Each August the fruits of the vine and the labours of the growers are celebrated during the Breisgau Weinfest held in the Market Place and streets of Emmendingen over four evenings. During a visit to the Weinfest in 2006 members of Newark Town Council and Newark Twinning Association had the idea to recreate the Weinfest in Newark in some way. It was decided to hold the First Newark Wine Festival as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations. The event proved to be a great success and the Town Council passed a resolution that the LocAle & Weinfest would be a biennial event in Newark’s events calendar.
We hope to be joined by as many of our wine producer friends from Emmendingen as possible but the event (for a few years, at least!) will be on a smaller scale than in Germany. We are hoping that we will have a small number of English wine producers at this festival. To date Wroxeter Roman Vineyard has confirmed*. We are also pleased to be joined, once again, by the Newark branch of CAMRA who have many years experience running their very successful Beer Festivals at the end of May each year. CAMRA were an integral part of the success of the inaugural festival. CAMRA will be hosting a selection of LocAles which, as the name suggests, is ale produced locally – within 20 miles, in fact.
